Civil War Union Camp
Civil War Union Camp
The images here were photographed 2000-2001. Several fortunate relic hunters had permission from the farm owners to relic hunt on their property. All of the relics shown were dug from soldiers hut sites and trash pits in winter camps of the US Army, 5th Corps, 1862-63, Stafford County Virginia. Soldiers spent much of their time writing letters home. Officers always needed to maintain log books in addition to plenty of other writing so finding inkwells in a Civil War camp is common. The emptying of whiskey, beer, bitters and spirits bottles helped pass the time when not mobilized so those empty bottles were also discarded regularly.
