Piladelphia Colored Pontil Druggist
This early colored pontil Philadelphia druggist bottle was dug in a Philadelphia privy, on private property, with the owner's permission. This bottle appears to be about c1825 and there is only one known whole example in emerald green that was sold in Glass Works Auction #89, The Summer Sizzler, July 12, 2010. The example in the sale has two 3/4th inch in making pontil cracks extending from the pontil. The bottle is 7½ inches tall and has a similar applied tapered collar mouth. This stock bottle undoubtedly had a paper label identifying it's contents on the unembossed side. The bottle was put up by Frederick Brown who operated a drug and chemical store at the northeast corner of 5th & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia. He was best known for his F. Brown's Essence of Jamaica Ginger. The factual information was copied from Glass Works Auction Catalog 89.
